Karnataka three-day wine fest from today

August 9, 2016 – The Karnataka State Wine Board has organised a three-day wine fest from August 19 to 21 at the Horticulture Producers’ Cooperative Marketing and Processing Society Limited in Vinobha Nagar locality in Bengaluru, reports The Hindu.

The ‘Shivamogga Wine Fest-2016’ is designed as an interaction between grape growers, wine producers and consumers.  Managing director of the board,T. Somu, said 15 wineries have confirmed their participation. More than 150 brands of wine that include red, white and sparkling varieties will be available for sale at a 10% discount, according to the news report,alongside technical sessions on grape cultivation, wine appreciation and tasting as well as food and wine tasting.

Since its inception the Board has organised 25 similar events across the State to promote wine culture. Mr. Somu said that 73 lakh litres of wine were sold in Karnataka in 2015. The annual per capita consumption of wine in India is 20 ml against the consumption of nearly 40 litres in some European countries. Mr. Somu noted that grape growers will be benefit from the growth in the sale of wine. At present, about 10% of the grapes grown in Karnataka are used for making wine.
