Purewal, (pictured, left) oncologist at St. Teresa Comprehensive Cancer Center in Stockton, California, just an hour away from Napa Valley, is a wine lover and partner of pureCru Napa Valley and Whetstone Wine Cellars. Referring to his partner he says, “Mitch is an artist. He creates fantastic blends. I have been enjoying his wines for years. So when an opportunity to be part of his new venture appeared I went for it.” Brinda Gill met him in California.

Mitch Cosentino, the co-founder of Cosentino Winery (now in new hands) is known for having experimented constantly and produced new varietals and sought after blends including Meritage (from merit and heritage) wines, which are high-quality Bordeaux-style blended wines.
“Mitch is credited with producing the first designated and licensed Meritage wine in the US. His most famous Meritage wine is M Coz. It was the official wine served at the American Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival,” Dr. Purewal says.
With 30 years of wine making experience at Cosentino, for whom he remains a consultant winemaker, Mitch was keen to focus on producing small quantities of unique blends to pair with fine international cuisine. He launched pureCru Napa Valley, with partners Don Held, Jim Nylen, champion golfer Fred Couples and Dr. Purewal. pureCru is a blend of pure (as in clean) from Purewal, Coz, Mitch’s nickname, and Cru from the classification of wines in France.
pureCru produces wines under two labels – pureCos and Couples & Co wines. The portfolio comprises two white wines: Purity (a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon) and pureCru Chardonnay, as well as five red wines: pureCoz, MCoz, Secret 7, Sangio Vetta (which are blends of varying percentages of red wine grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Sangiovese) and pureCru Cabernet Sauvignon.
Special labels are designed by the winery for personalized gifts. The winery received three awards at the 2011 Los Angeles International Wine and Spirits Awards. “Mitch calls pureCru a winemaker’s wine project. All the partners are happy to be involved with a winery that produces wines that reflect the wine maker’s love for what he does.”
