When in doubt between Red or White, reach for a Rosé

DSC_0121.JPGThe Sommelier India Tasting Panel has done your homework. This Valentine’s Day, treat your loved one to a rosé wine from our selection. The quality of rosé wines has never been better. There is now a vast variety of rosés available for drinking from around the world, which are suitable for everyday consumption as well as fine dining. So if you want to explore this style of wine, there are rich pickings to be had.

Given below is a small sampling of popular rosés from Spain, Italy, Portugal, Australia and India which we tasted blind to recommend to readers. All six wines are available in the country. However, France, which is the largest producer of rosé wines, is not represented in this tasting. We will save French rosés for a dedicated tasting later in the year. For more information about rosé wines, particularly the wines from France, read Sommelier India Issue 1, February-March 2013.
Rosés are meant to be drunk young, when their fruitiness can be savoured best. All the wines described below are ready to drink. Perhaps the greatest attribute of rosé wines is their versatility, whether in relation to food or occasion, and their quality/price ratio. Rosés are consistent in quality and deliver tremendous value for money.
There was a time when rosé wines were looked down upon as sweet and unsophisticated, but no longer. The shift towards rosés is a clearly discernible international trend. Many restaurant sommeliers regard them now the way they did Champagne and sparkling wine by pairing rosés with both fish and meat and, of course, with vegetables and salty dishes, with which they go very well.
The best rosés are dry, crisp and fruity, with a mix of fruit flavours. The fact that they are usually low in alcohol adds to their drinkability. Indeed, for an increasing number of wine drinkers, rosé represents the favoured middle-ground.
So when in doubt, between a red or a white wine, reach for a rosé!
