Official Fizz at Royal Wedding

royalwedding.jpgAmidst the flurry of news about preparations for the Royal Wedding, we finally know which sparkling wine is going to be served. It’s not Nyetimber or Ridgeview or any other English sparkling wine of exceptional quality, writes Reva K. Singh. The official fizz at the Royal Wedding on Friday, April 29th, as reported by Decanter.com, is Pol Roger Champagne.

Pol Roger NV will be offered as an aperitif before the sit-down meal prepared by Anton Mosimann and hosted by Prince Charles. According to a spokesman for Pol Roger a non-vintage had specifically been requested by the Palace.
We don’t know yet which wines will be served during the wedding breakfast at Buckingham Palace after the ceremony in Westminster Abbey. Perhaps an English wine will make its appearance then.
Pol Roger was the favourite Champagne of Sir Winston Churchill, and in 1984 the company created the Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill in his honour.
Traditionally, however, Pol Roger has not been drunk at royal weddings. Queen Victoria issued a royal warrant to Bollinger in 1884, and Prince Charles chose it both for his stag party and for his marriage to Lady Diana Spencer in 1981.
The British Embassy in Washington, DC, has selected Barboursville Octagon and Barboursville Vineyards Viognier Reserve for the evening reception celebrating the marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. (There is no information about what will be served at the British Embassy in Delhi.)
The Barboursville estate was founded in 1976 by Gianni Zonin, an Italian winemaker from the Veneto region. Considered one of the leading wineries in Virginia, Barboursville Octagon was served to Queen Elizabeth on her visit to Jamestown, Virginia in 2007. Barboursville Vineyards is Zonin’s only American venture.
The Zonin family has been making wine since 1821 and currently operates Italy’s largest privately owned vineyard and winemaking complex. The house produces 25 million bottles and exports its wines to 69 countries including India, imported by Aspri Wines and Spirits.
