Dear Wine enthusiast,

This is to introduce you to India’s first publication dedicated to wine and wine lovers called Sommelier India.

Why sommelier and what does it mean? It’s one of those words everyone has heard around wine but is often hard pressed to explain. Sommelier — sawm-uhl-yeah — roll it around your palate as you would a sip of wine at a wine tasting — sommelier — Sommelier India.

Sommelier simply means wine steward in French. We chose it as the name of our publication because that’s what the publication aims to be — an informed friend and guide to the world of wine.

Many people who dine out associate anything French as unpronounceable or expensive. And indeed, historically, sommeliers were wine stewards for the nobility. The modern sommelier, however, has become a wine steward of the people and for the people.

According to Fred Dame writing in Wine Trader magazine:
“A true sommelier should be extremely knowledgeable but not to the point of arrogance.” They should be able to make guests feel comfortable and confident in their wine selections.

“Sommeliers should be willing to share their skills regardless of what current ability any person demonstrates. A sommelier should possess cellar management and business skills commensurate with the operations in which they work.

“A sommelier should possess organized skills when tasting and be able to share their perceptions in appropriate language for the novice or the connoisseur. They should treat all members of the wine industry with respect, regardless of which segment they are from, producers, importers, distributors, etc. A sommelier should be professional.”

A tall order for a publication perhaps, but this is the role we hope to fulfil, at least in part, for our readers.

And since sommeliers are now of the people and for the people, Sommelier India is for you — and about you — the growing tribe of wine enthusiasts in India.

The publication will be subscriber based for a restricted but discerning readership.
