This time round the competition aims to be bigger and better than in the past. It will kick off with an intensive three-day sommelier programme in Mumbai and Delhi during which candidates will attend master classes and tastings of wines and spirits guided by international experts. A written and practical exam will follow.
The grand finale will take place in Delhi for toppers from the competing cities. After a gruelling written test, they will be put through their paces pouring the perfect pint, uncorking and serving a sparkling wine or Champagne, and decanting and serving still wine. They will also be expected to taste and comment on selected wines and dark spirits in a blind tasting and finish with a pairing of wine and food, all within the allotted time slot.
An expert jury will mark them for knowledge, proficiency and speed. The results will be announced later the same evening at a gala sit-down dinner where the Capital’s wine cognoscenti will gather to felicitate the finalists over great food and fine wines.
In previous years, prizes for winners of the Indian Sommelier Championship included a trip to Australia for an immersion course with Penfolds, WSET Level III scholarships from Robert Mondavi, travel to the biggest Hungarian wine show, a stay at Fratelli vineyards and dinner at The Leela Palace. This time successful candidates have all this and more to look forward to as the organisers intend to up the ante further.
The goal of the 7th edition of the Indian Sommelier Championship is to raise the level of wine service in India and promote the development of world class sommeliers.
