“It’s an honour to be awarded this title of recognition,” said Ranjit S. Chougule, Managing Director of Indage Vintners Ltd., commenting on the Silver Medal awarded to Indage Vineyards’ Reserve Merlot 2006 at the Mondial du Merlot Awards, 2008 in Switzerland. “It means a great deal to us both in terms of bringing recognition to Indage as a quality wine producer for our consistency in producing premium wines as well as for India to be known as a serious contender in the global wine business. It’s also hugely encouraging!”
The Mondial du Merlot competition was organized under the patronage and norms of the professional associations of Swiss oenologists and sommeliers, as well as that of Paris-based International Organisation for Vine and Wine (OIV). A jury of 20 oenologists, sommeliers, and wine writers met at the Hotel Villa Principe Leopoldo in Lugano, Switzerland, and judged 278 Merlots from 24 countries.
The Reserve Merlot from Indage Vineyards is a 100% Merlot made from 100% estate grown grapes that have been carefully grown and selected for their quality fruit. The wine is oak aged for three months in new barrels and three months in old barrels. 2006 was the first vintage of this single varietal wine. “We’ve tried to bring expression of fruit while providing good structure so an optimum level of tannins from picking to ageing was crucial. We’ve also tried to drive some individuality of our tropical belt vineyards into the bottle”, added Chougule.
The tasting notes of the wine describe the wine as very round and opulent with intense aromas of cherry fruit backed by a warm alcohol structure, and soft tannins that become more expressive with hints of black currant and pepper at the finish. It is recommended as an ideal accompaniment with pasta, cold salads, mature cheese and most light meat dishes.
