As the story goes, in 1790, the Royal Physician to the Habsburg Court, Dr Jozsef Zwack concocted this liqueur for the ailing emperor of Hungary, Joseph II. He liked it so much that he reportedly said, “Dr Zwack, Das ist ein unicum!” (which literally translates to, This is unique!”). The drink became so popular that it is also known as the “national shot of Hungary.”
The company Zwack Unicum produces a lot of herbal liqueurs and spirits such as Zwack kosher plum brandy, all of which boast unique characters and preparation methods. Zwack, the amber-hued liqueur, gets its colour from the herbs and spices that are aged in oak casks for over 6 months, at the company’s factory in Budapest.
Price: A 75 cl bottle of Zwack is available for $35 at Delhi Duty Free
