Sometimes it takes a visiting journalist to capture the essence of a city’s nightlife better than anyone else. This time it was a Wall Street Journal reporter’s turn who covered the nightlife in South Mumbai (SOBO) and in North Mumbai (NOBO) and discussed the best places for wine. First on the list was one of our own favorites – Indigo (4 Mandlik Rd., Colaba; 91-22-6636-8985) as a place with a large list (old news to us!) and a great place to start an evening.
Tetsuma (41/44 Mon Repos, Minoo Desai Marg; 91-22-2287-6578) got a mention because of its 3,000 bottle wine-list as did Oba Club (Near Regal Cinema, Colaba Causeway; 91-22-6524-7070) where a three course dinner and a glass of wine can cost $50.
In north Mumbai it was Vie Deck & Lounge (102 Juhu Tara Rd.; 91-22-2660-3003; www.vie.co.in) with its wines from South Africa, Chile, Argentina, France, Spain, Italy and California that got a mention as did Aurus (Nichani Kutir, Juhu Tara Road; 91-22-6710-6666) which notably carries Sula. A three course meal here costs $85. Mangi Ferra (Road #7, Gulmohar Cross Road, JVPD Scheme; 91-22-6675-1728) also got a mention thanks to its 75 varieties of wine in its cellar.
There were several other restaurants highlighted but these caught our eye because they were singled out as having wine lists that matter. Do you agree that these are great restaurants for wine in Mumbai? Is there a restaurant missing that needs to be in the list? Tell us what you think.
