Where Have All The Wines Gone?

red wine.jpegThere's such a dearth of good wine retailers in our capital that I'm always at a loss when asked, "Where can I get a decent bottle of wine?" Where, indeed? Especially if you are looking for new, out-of-the-way wines. Are we living in a wine desert? asks Reva K. Singh

With a philosophy driven by price rather than quality, there is little incentive for distributors to be adventurous. Now, with the cost of exporting wine spiralling out of control because of the depreciating rupee, our choice will be further restricted.

Said Sachin Abrol, GM, Aspri Spirits, "The fall of the rupee vis-à-vis the dollar is a huge loss for us and it has definitely impacted the cost of wines."

When times are tough, if a wine is a slow mover, it gets dropped and you and I lose out, as another label vanishes from the shelves. If you have a taste for claret or Super Tuscans, you'll find them becoming more expensive and scarce.

And if you are dreaming of a neighbourhood shop where you can have a face-to-face conversation and perhaps an opportunity to taste the wine before you buy, dream on. Let me know, if you find one, because I don't know of any.

In the present scenario, perhaps our best bet is outfits like The Wine Society of India where one can make a selection online or order over the phone and the wine is delivered to your doorstep.

Every cloud has a silver lining, however. The choice in good quality wines produced in India is growing and we expect them to get better. SI's Great Indian Wine Tasting by the Sommelier India Tasting Panel will take place before the end of the year and will help you zoom in on the best.
