USL and Diageo bosses to head Indian alcobev industry

Mumbai, 1 October 2012: The Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC), the apex body of the wine and spirits industry in India, has announced the appointment of Mr. Ashok Capoor, President and Managing Director, United Spirts Ltd. (USL), as its new Chairman and Ms. Abanti Sankaranarayanan, Managing Director, Diageo India, as the new Vice-Chairman of the industry body.

Ashok Capoor took over as USL's President and Managing director in May last year. He has been with the UB Group since 1992 as Division Vice President and had earlier worked in the highly regulated tobacco and alcoholic beverages sector. He is known as a stickler for good governance and performance.

On taking over, Mr Capoor, said in a media release, "CIABC is committed to enforcing self-discipline amongst members for promoting responsible consumption of alcohol. We are collaborating actively with the Global Alcohol Producers Group to align closely with policy makers and consolidate individual CSR efforts to the industry level."

Abanti Sankaranarayanan joined Diageo India in 2010 and was promoted
as Managing Director this year. Wellknown for her brand marketing expertise, she is charged with leading Diageo India's ambitious expansion plans. Prior to joining Diageo, she was a part of the Tata Administrative Services since 1992. She grew within the group over 18 years, before leaving from her post of Executive Director and Deputy CEO at Mount Everest Mineral Water.

"There are several areas of common interest within the alcohol beverage industry particularly in the areas of taxation, regulation, and responsible marketing and
promotion. I am committed to working with CIABC and other industry
players to move these forward," said Ms Sankaranarayanan in a statement.

As noted in the CIABC company release, the current scenario for the beverage alcohol industry is one of both challenges and opportunities. The industry is looking forward to the leadership of the new guard.
