Really Gru-vee. Austrian Gruner Veltiner

Sommelier India Tasting panel recommends Austrian Gruner Veltliner white wines available in India. In order of preference, the tasting notes are as follows:

Donabaum, Grüner Veltliner, Federspiel 2007, Wachau, Austria
Donabaum.JPG
Medium to pale lemon in appearance with an attractive, bright 'robe'. Intense, distinctive Grüner nose of green and white peppercorns, evening flowers (jasmine) and a hint of peach and pineapple. Some spicy characters too, especially cardamom, but very faint and merely suggestive. Grippy yet refreshing with limey citrus and a slight chalkiness on the palate. A medium to long finish that leaves the mouth watering. Importer: The Wine Park. Price in Mumbai: Rs 3,187

Heidler, Grüner Veltliner, Thal 2007, Kamptal, Austria
Heidler.JPG
Medium lemon in appearance. A restrained nose with some white pepper and a hint of tropical/exotic fruit. White peach. A slight oily suggestion, reminiscent of aged Riesling and even white Burgundy. On the palate, it has a medium to full body with soft acidity and an 'oily' texture with fleshy fruit. A faint suggestion of brown spice. A wine that is at its peak now. Short to medium finish. A little hot at 13% alcohol. Importer: Sonarys Cobrands. Price in Mumbai & Delhi: Rs 2,580 app

Bründlmayer, Grüner Veltliner, 2008, Kamptal, Austria
Brundelmayer.JPG
Bright, medium lemon/gold. Citrus and flowers on the nose with a faint hint of white pepper. Some tropical fruit and a noticeable mineral/gravel note. Almost Chablis-esque in some aspects. Delicate flavours on the palate - peach/pear and lemon-citrus. Light to medium bodied with refreshing, noticeable acidity. Short to medium finish. A good apèritif. Importer: Sonarys Cobrands. Price in Mumbai & Delhi: Rs 2,250 app

Lenz Moser Selection, Grüner Veltliner, 2008, Niederösterreich
lenzM.jpg
Pale gold with a very faint pink/grey hue indicative of extended skin contact, perhaps. An innocuous nose that doesn't give much away. Some tropical fruit - very faint. Light, refreshing palate with very little varietal definition. Light to medium-bodied with a short to medium finish. Very much a commercial style. Easy to drink and not too heavy on the wallet! Importer: De Vine Ventures.
