Westin Pune launches Italian restaurant

prego image blog.jpgPrego, the Italian restaurant at Pune's all-new luxury hotel The Westin Pune Koregaon Park, hosted an enjoyable wine dinner on 21st December 2009 to announce its presence on the city's culinary map. And what could be more apt than an offering of Italian wines to pair with authentic Italian specialities? writes Brinda Gill.

Enhancing the Italian culinary experience were wines imported by Riona Wines Pvt Ltd from The Marches region of Italy, regarded as one of the most important wine producing regions in the country.

In keeping with the sentiments of Sandit Shah, Director - Sales & Marketing, that Prego is based on a fun concept that seeks to turn fine dining into 'fun' dining, the informal evening got underway with delicious pizzas and Rosso Piceno, Colle Malvano, a light, delicate wine that is a blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano grapes, along with a presentation of the history and wine culture of The Marches.

The sit-down dinner presented a light and flavourful meal: warm bread with an olive-oil and balsamic vinegar dip, was accompanied by a bowl of warming soup. Cappuccino di Fagioli Cannellini e Funghi (white beans cappuccino with wild mushrooms) for the vegetarian and Zuppa di Barbabietola Rossa for the non-vegetarian diners was served with Capricco Chardonnay, a fresh and soft wine.

The main course was Pepperoni Arrosti Ripieni (oven roasted bell peppers filled with vegetables and taleggio cheese) paired with the intense and fruity Elianto Cabernet Sauvignon for the vegetarians, and Salmone Arrosto (roasted salmon, baby potatoes, olive, parsley and white wine) paired with the flavourful Templi, Nero d'Avola for the non-vegetarians.

Live music played through the evening and the open kitchen buzzed with activity as guests enjoyed the food and wine. Members of the wine industry and Westin who had contributed to making it an enjoyable evening were introduced to guests. Nasir Shaikh, Director F & B, and K.T. Mane, CEO, Riona Wines, and other hosts interacted with guests to ensure everyone was well looked after, with Shaikh saying that all efforts were being made to make Prego famous for its friendliness, fun and great food and wine.

The leisurely evening ended nicely with Baba al Cioccolato e Rum, a light and delicious rum soaked chocolate cake with a small glass of classic vanilla ice-cream, while the Italian experience was wrapped up with a gift for guests of a striking duotone photograph by acclaimed Italian photographer Mario Giacommelli, born in The Marches.
