SIWC - A Competition That Inspires Confidence

finalglass11.jpgAs Reva Singh wrote in June (Ed's Note, SI July/August 2009, which many of you would have seen by now) Sommelier India - The Wine Magazine in association with The Wine Society of India has embarked on an exciting new project that will help consumers decide between the good and the not-so-good or the good and the excellent - the Sommelier India Wine Competition (SIWC).

SIWC has been in the works since the beginning of the year as we've been in conversations with Indian wine producers, importers, hoteliers, restaurateurs and our advisory board. The objectives of the competition are to provide an independent and trusted forum where domestic and imported wines available in India can be judged and rated by a panel of nationally respected wine experts.

The judging is based on a blind, consensual procedure under the expert guidance of the internationally acclaimed wine critic and writer, Steven Spurrier, who is already well-known in India, ensuring that excellence is recognized and rewarded.

SIWC is already being heralded as an India-based world-class wine competition which provides a transparent platform to advise and educate the wine novitiate and expert, alike, on their wine choices.

The SIWC project has been on the cards for some time and we are excited about the support, encouragement and commitments we've received across the board. This is a wine competition that will inspire confidence and be a force for good, keeping the consumer firmly in mind while supporting the industry.

Conceived and developed in India through SI, India's only magazine dedicated to wine, the competition will be mindful of the sensitivities of the Indian market and provide an unbiased, professional and trusted perspective for the countless wine enthusiasts who look to Sommelier India for guidance on everything wine, including which wines to buy.

The competition will take place in Mumbai followed by a Gala Awards Dinner on November 19 and 20th. Watch this space for more details and share your thoughts with us on what you look for in a wine competition. This is a competition for you and your input at every stage is important to us!
