Eating your way through Asia

panasian.jpgIf you are looking for an authentic Asian meal paired with wine, especially when transiting at Mumbai's international airport, you could opt to dine at Pan Asian, at the ITC Maratha hotel located just outside the airport, suggests Brinda Gill. Executive Chef Liang Xiao Qing brings 30 years of culinary experience and young Australian sommelier, Amy Gutherie contributes her knowledge of wines to provide guests an enjoyable dining experience.

The extensive food menu drawn from the cuisines of different Asian countries including China, Japan, Thailand, Korea and Singapore offers about two hundred preparations that includes soups, starters, salads, wraps, rolls, skewers, dimsums, Mongolian grills, Teppanyaki preparations, main course specialities and desserts. The sushi sashimi bar featuring master chef Koizumi offers the charm of a Japanese dining experience.

"As we cater to guests from all over the world we have an extensive menu to ensure there is something for everyone. We offer authentic Asian cuisine that is prepared to a guest's preferences", says Chef Qing. "In a fine dining speciality restaurant it is very important to understand what the guest wants and be flexible in your approach so that the guest enjoys the meal". The restaurant also offers a choice of four business lunch menus, for a minimum of four guests, priced between Rs. 1100 to Rs. 2100 per person inclusive of taxes.

The wine menu features about 86 labels of Indian and international white, red, rosé and sparkling wines as well as sakes and Champagnes; of which some wines are also served by the glass. "The wine menu presents wines by countries and regions to invite guests to explore the diversities of wines", says Amy, adding that the selection offers wines to pair with the diverse food menu. While guests have their own preferences regarding food and wine pairing she feels the Tavel E Guigal 2006, Rosé, from Rhone Valley is perfect with most Asian food. "Served chilled at lunch with its gorgeous pink colour and rich, intense flavours of Grenache this rosé make for an excellent food and wine pairing".

Amy recommends the crisp and refreshing Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2007 from Cape Mentelle, Australia, as a perfect wine to go with Mongolian grills. She feels Champagne goes particularly well with Japanese tempura (that is light in flavours and fatty in textures) as it is light and refreshing, and as its bubbles act like a sorbet and cleanse the palate.

"Wine is not just a glass of alcohol. It is about all the blood, sweat and tears that go in making it. It is about enjoying it with food and with friends", says Amy. With its good authentic Asian food elegantly presented, fine wines and warm service, Pan Asian offers guest a complete fine dining experience.
