The Allure of Allegrini

Brindco, importers of fine wine and spirits, along with well known Italian wine producer, Allegrini recently hosted a small and intimate tasting at the restaurant Manré in New Delhi's Metropolitan Mall. The wines included some of the most awarded wines, including Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico DOC 2004, which received 93 points by the Wine Spectator in July 2008. Rahoul Singh was present at the tasting.allegrini1a.jpg

With vineyards located in Valpolicella, a hilly region between Verona, which lies to the southeast and Lake Garda to the west, the Allegrini family have been cultivating vines from ever since the 16th century. "Valpolicella", translating to "land of many cellars" is amongst the more prominent appellations in Italy. Amarone wine is a product of this region.

As an innovative and evolving winery, Allegrini have over the years further developed the potential of the Corvina grape, re-assessed and improved the grape drying techniques that are particular to the making of Amarone and have introduced Bordeaux style blends in the alluvial plains of Valpolicella.

The wines made available to us for the tasting were Corte Giara Bardolino, Corte Giara Valpolicella, Allegrini Valpolicella Classico D.O.C, Amarone Classico D.O.C. La Poja. The Amarone, a blend of Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Oseleta was simultaneously well structured and complex. The highly enjoyable Bardolino was slightly dry and with its mildly bitter after taste paired wonderfully with an assortment of appetizers. The tasting was conducted by Sales and Marketing Director, Alessandro Vallecchi, a veteran of the wine trade.

Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico DOC 2004 Tasting Notes
An interesting melange of currant, prune, flowers and hints of cardamom on the nose follow through to a full body, where the fruit turns to fresh black currant, coating the firm tannins and giving a long, fresh finish of fruit and mineral. Superfresh and well structured. Delicious now, but better to wait. Best after 2010. For more information email info@brindco.com.
