Celebrating an anniversary with a gourmet wine lunch

`I support the four basic food groups – Cabernet, Chardonnay, Merlot and Champagne' read the words on the apron B. Shankaranarayan donned as he welcomed members of the Pune Gourmet Club and guests to celebrate the club's second anniversary. The Pune Gourmet Club is an informal group of food and wine lovers, who enjoy cooking and sharing their efforts with each other. Brinda Gill was present.chefparagpunegourmet.jpg

As the bottles of sparkling wine popped, the effervescence of the bubbly was matched by the enthusiasm of Shankar, the members of the club and Chef Parag Kanhere who had spared no efforts for the sit down lunch served at Silk Route, the popular Oriental restaurant, that Rita and Nainpal Sawhney had generously offered for the occasion. The wines served were courtesy Vinsura.

The menu was drawn from the different cuisines of South America. The main course of charcoal grilled chicken, marinated in Chef Kanhere's special mix; and a mélange of vegetables marinated in Balsamic vinegar, grilled on charcoal and shaped into a steak, were served with Chimichurri sauce, a speciality from Argentina. Next came Mofongos, a small mound of fried, mashed green plantains with a stuffing, vegetarian or shrimp, a speciality from Puerto Rico, served with Sofrito sauce, a favourite in Cuba. The meal was wrapped up with home-made rum ice-cream and spicy chocolate sauce circled by grilled bananas, a treat from Brazil.

The food was complemented with the Vinsura Brut sparkling, Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé. These wines were selected as the food was lightly flavoured, crisp in texture and not accompanied by any overwhelming sauces.
