Faint Praise for Bordeaux 2007 from Parker
| Robert Parker has finally released his scores for the Bordeaux 2007 vintage. And his scores aren't going to bring much joy to the Bordeaux En Primeur community. He awarded only three wines 100 points, all of them white wines and among the reds only four got 95 points. With the whites Chateaux Pape Clement Blanc and Haut-Brion Blanc received 96-100 points while Climens was awarded 98-100 points. |  |
Among the first growths, the top score was 94 which went to Margaux earning 92-94. Haut-Brion earned 91-94; and Mouton-Rothschild, 90-94. Chateaux Lafite-Rothschild and Latour both only earned 90-93. In summary, Parker referred to the vintage as a modern day 1997 with his main criticism being that these wines lack aging potential. And he was most impressed with Grand-Puy-Lacoste (89-91), Duhart-Milon-Rothschild (86-88), Batailley (87-89) and the 'brilliant' Pontet-Canet (91-94) for being 'good value'.
The weather certainly played tricks last fall and arguably, the vintage was saved. But as we saw ourselves during the En Primeur week, Bordeaux 2007 is a mixed vintage. The Chateaux that did the best are the ones that really took care of their vines during those crucial months, weeks and days leading up to the harvesting. It comes as no surprise that Parker wasn't impressed. These wines don't cater to his taste buds either.
