Barole of Honour Wine Tasting

As always the Barole of Honour Wine Tasting was meticulously organised by Sanjay Menon, along with a detailed booklet describing the extraordinary wines supported by background information and maps of the region which was of great value. The presentation was clear, punctuated by interesting anecdotes and personal commentary. The audience, in turn, was informed and appreciative.menon2a.jpg

This was a line-up of the top producers of Piedmonte, the boutique wineries that produce tiny quantities of hand-crafted wines from 4 producers, each of whom have top Cru sites in Barolo and who each earn every year, the most coveted Italian wine award, the Tre-Bicchieri or Three-Glass award in the annual compendium of Italian wine, Vini d'Italia. They include Elio Altare, Matteo Correggia, Domenico Clerico and Paolo Scavino.

Presenting the wines was Domenico di Luccio a son of the soil; his father is one of the tiny, boutique winemakers in Barolo. Domenico, however, works for Marc d'Grazia, the most influential-by-far negotiant from Barolo; whose owner, Marco d'Grazia was listed by Robert Parker amongst a list of 31 visionary figures of the wine world, a list that includes Robert Mondavi, Christian Mouiex, Antinori, Gaja, amongst others.
