What I Drink: Ghulam Naqshband

“Wine drinking is a culture that is widespread in many parts of the world and it is only recently catching on in India. I recall the time when Golconda wines came on the scene with little success, followed by the appearance of Bosca wine which got eclipsed after the three wine makers – Grover Vineyards, Indage (India) and Sula Vineyards started marketing their products. They have done much needed service to the country, as their wines are not only consumed here but some of them are even exported, earning foreign exchange.

Having acquired a taste for wine because of my travels to Europe over the last forty years, I am content with Indian brands – though I miss the foreign ones. My choice is mostly inclined towards red wines because they are beneficial for the heart as per the British Medical Journal. My preference is for Grover Vineyards’ brand ‘La Reserve’ made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, one of the four finest red wine grapes. The wine has an aroma of blackcurrants, cassis, cedar and oak, and is an improvement on their Cabernet Sauvignon, which was their first wine in the market.

Wine drinking depends very much on personal palate and choice but to keep changing brands adds to the exciting experience and spice of life. But alas this is not possible yet for us Indians. Hopefully, with the reduction on customs duties on imported wines expected in the next budget of the Government, the market may be flooded with foreign brands. That will provide a real test for establishing your personal preference for particular labels.”
