Uncorking a new era of wines in India

The Indian mainstream press continues to capture the Indian wine revolution. Here the Times of India discusses the Indian wine market and how much it is expected to grow. However, even in ten years time the Indian market is projected to grow to 5 million cases as against China's 50 million cases today.

Wine Drinkers have Healthier Diets!

People who buy wine also buy healthier food and therefore have healthier diets than people who buy beer, finds a study published online by the British Medical Journal. Apparently, wine drinkers tend to eat fruit, vegetables, and fish and use cooking oil more often and saturated fat less often than those who prefer other alcoholic drinks. India Food & Wine Show a Success

The India Food and Wine Show was held in Mumbai and Delhi recently. As part of the International Food and Wine Show taking place at the Taj Palace Hotel from January 19-21, is ‘Vinitaly’. The exhibition showcases wines from 50 Italian brands and is the largest of its kind in the world and is held annually in Verona. It has now come to India.

Are wine and cheese incompatible?

According to the results of tests conducted at the University of California, Davis, cheese dulls the taste of red wine, making it difficult to discern different flavours. Dr Hildegard Heymann, who led the research, found that after eating cheese, wine tasters could not tell the difference between expensive wine and cheap plonk. Learn more at Decanter.com.

Louis Jadot Chairman in India

Pierre Henry Gagey of Louis Jadot was in Delhi recently to promote his wines. Louis Jadot is one of the five largest Burgundy wine producers. Fine Italian Wines Premium Brands Seminar

The Institute of Fine Italian Wines is presenting a range of fine wines from Italy's top producers on January 17th in Mumbai at the Grand Hyatt Hotel and on January 19th in Delhi at the Taj Palace Hotel. the wine producers being represented include A.G Folonari, Alois Lagedar, Antinori, Biondi Santi, Ca del Bosco, Gaja, Lungarotti, Masi, Mastroberardino, Michele, Chiarlo, Pio Rivera, Tasca D'Alterita and Umani Ronchi.

Women allowed to serve liquor

Ushering in a major change in the Capital's hospitality industry, the Delhi High Court on Thursday lifted the restriction on women serving liquor at public places. The Delhi High Court declared that the 1914 act prohibiting women from serving behind a bar was unconstitutional. This helps the beverage industry and wine specifically.

Maharashtra protects its wine industry

The government of the Indian state of Maharashtra has decided to raise the special excise duty on imported wines from the existing INR100 (US$2.26) a litre to INR200. The measure is aimed at supporting the domestic wine industry. Currently 30,000 cases of wine are imported versus domestic sales of 200,000 cases.

Drinking wine in the winter

Did you know that wine consumption in India increases by 50% during the winter months? This is largely because of the festivals like Diwali, Christmas and New Years. However, another factor at play is that in the cooler months it is easier to store wine for longer.

At Krishi 2005, Wine took the cake!

Six days, nearly 2.5 lakh visitors including 1.75 lakh farmers alone, from all over India, Rs 35 crore in turnover, spread over 12 acres and in excess of 300 stalls – Krishi 2005, the Indian Agricultural Trade Fair, held in early December 2005, was certainly a success. Sommelier India was the Krishi 2005 official publication.

Sula Selections introduces Fortant

Sula Selections, the import arm of Sula Vineyards, is introducing a range of Fortant wines from sun-kissed southern France into Indias.  Embodying the exuberance of the Languedoc region, Fortant was earlier known as ‘Fortant de France’. Fortant will be available in Mumbai, Goa and Karnataka.

Wine Cellars available for sale in India

The Chinese home appliances major, Haier, has introduced wine cellars in India. Currently the wine cellars are available in two models in India, one with a capacity of 20 bottles and the other with a capacity of 30 bottles. Priced at Rs 17,990 and Rs 21,990 respectively, the cellars would be displayed in the forthcoming IFOWs.

Vineyards were under two metres of water

Floods in the Napa and Sonoma valleys have caused three deaths and at least US$50m worth of damage. According to Decanter magazine, six days of torrential rain caused extensive flooding to wineries on thelower ground at the southern end of the valley, but at this time of year vines will not have been damaged. When vines are dormant in the winter they can withstand two weeks of flooding.

Wine Buffet at Grand Hyatt, Mumbai

Every Thursday, the Grand Hyatt, Mumbai will have a wine buffet to a dinner of authentic grill cuisine at "M". The wine buffet comprises a minimum of 10 varieties of red and white wines from across the globe by first ordering from M’s a la carte menu. The wine buffet is priced at Rs 850 per person (taxes extra).

An Italian Fest at Mezzo in Mumbai

Mezzo at the JW Marriott in Mumbai is having Bersano Wine festival featuring a four-course menu with a glass of wine to match every dish. On till January 25, the dinner is priced at Rs 1,950 per person. On the 25th, there will be a grand wine finale, where a lucky draw will decide who wins a three-day trip to the Bersano Winery, Italy.

Bangalore Wine Club Event

According to Alok Chandra, the Bangalore Wine Club held a unique event in mid-December 2005: an auction of 10 wines, with the proceeds going to charity. The combination of good wines, good people and good intentions was unbeatable, as Rs 20,000 was raised in just one hour for the Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre.

Wine has many uses and Indian actress Raveena Tandon showed the world one of them at a New Years party. She poured wine on husband distributor Anil Thadani's ex-wife Natasha Sippy, in full public view because Natasha was trying to get too close to Anil. We are still trying to find out which wine was used.

South of France Wine Tasting in Mumbai

Altios India will be hosting a delegation of four French wine companies from the South of France (Languedoc Roussillon) in Mumbai on January 16th, 2006. Altios is organizing a wine tasting for members of the press and the wine industry. 125 Vineyards in India and Cheap Wine!

In an article for Business Standard, Sommelier India contributor Alok Chandra, recently discussed how wine consumption in India is going to grow exponentially over the next five years. He also predicted that the number of wineries will increase from 25 to 100, that wine bars will proliferate and that "bag in a box" the market. We hope those predictions come true as they will only benefits the wine drinkers across the country. You can be certain that we'll be tracking the pace of change!
