According to Decanter magazine, Niebaum-Coppola has released a Champagne-like wine – in an elegantly decorated pink can. Sofia Mini Blanc de Blanc is named after actress-director Sofia Coppola, daughter of the renowned Godfather director and winery proprietor. The wine blends 70% Pinot Blanc, 20% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Muscat Cannelli to create a Champagne-like wine sold in cans, and supplied with a straw.

Models took part in the traditional crushing of grapes during Chateau Indage's annual wine festival in Mumbai on Christmas day. Chateau Indage is one of India's largest wine producers and was setup in 1982 in technical collaboration with Champagne Technologie of France.

A surprising participant in next month's International Food and Wine Show (Delhi) is going to be the Alabama State Agricultural Department from the US. The State Agriculture Commissioner said, ""This is the beginning of the department's focus on trade with India. I believe India, with its population of 1.08 billion people, provides a tremendous opportunity for Alabama companies."

A group of French winemakers are complaining about the new drinking and driving laws in France. With the new drinking laws, three glasses of wine provide enough alcohol to constitute drunken driving even if the glasses were drunk with a meal.
Les 4 Vérités sur le Vin, which is the group campaigning for a higher legal driving limit for wine than for other types of alcohol, argues that the legal driving limit of 0.5 grams per litre of blood, among other regulations, is too hard on wine – and has led to declines in restaurant wine sales and national wine consumption.
Himachel Indage, a subsidary of Champagne India Limited is setting up twin wineries at Nagwain (Mandi) and Pragati Nagar (Shimla) with an investment of Rs. 60 crores. The company has signed an MOU with the Himachel Pradesh government for a joint venture and is set to launch the project shortly said S.G Chougle, Chairman of Himachel Indage.
The Wine Society organized a tasting of Indian wines on Saturday 24th, December 2005 at The Park, New Delhi. The wineries that participated included Chateau Indage, Grover, Sula, Renaissance and Vinsura. The event was planned as a mini vin-expo with each participant having its own table. Wine Society members were able to walk around and do their own tastings. Each producer also showcased and discussed one of their wines. Adam Strum, Publisher and Editor in Chief of Wine Enthusiast was a special guest at the event. On a separate note, Sommelier India interviewed him earlier in the month.

The Delhi Wine Club tasted Jacobs Creek Reserva wines at the Manor Hotel, Friends Colony West on December 15th, 2005. The evening included a 7 course meal.

The third International Food, Drink and Hospitality Exhibition (IFE) just ended in Delhi with over a 100 exhibits and participation from 11 countries at Pragati Maidan’s Hall No.7. By all accounts, the exhibition was a success and included conferences on the Indian wine market, wine tasting and informational sessions for F&B managers.

Wine Evolution is being organized for wine executives from around the world. This conference is being held between January 30th & 31st, 2006 at the Palais des Congrès de Paris, France. Rajeev Samant from Sula Wines will be speaking at the event.
The Delhi Wine Club conducted a tasting of Brix and Gruaud Larose wines at Brix Restaurant at Hotel Grand on December 11th, 2005. It was a vertical tasting of Gruaud Larose 2000, 1999, 1996 and the 1989. This is a cecond Growth Chateau in Saint-Julien, Bordeaux. The tasting was paired with a 5 course dinner.
Sula Vineyards has introduced Sula Brut Magnums, 1.5 litre bottles of their spakling wine. These bottles are currently available in Maharashtra and Goa and are ideal for corporate events.
Australian wine writer James Halliday launched a blistering attack on American wine critics Robert Parker and Matt Kramer when he critisized their wine ratings. He believes that Australia needs to promote its more sophisticated wines from the smaller vineyards. Read the article at Decanter Magazine.
"We established a wine bar between Pune and Nasik and it's surprising to see a guy in a dhoti-kurta drinking wine next to a merchant banker in a suit! It just goes to show that if you make wine available at the right place and at the right price, even the guy in the dhoti wants to drink it," says Vikrant Chougule who belongs to the Chateau Indage family in a DNA article. We certainly hope that everyone in India starts drinking wine!

I am not a wine snob. I know there is red wine, white wine and an in-between wine called rosé which seems to suffer from an identity crisis. In London, I went to Vinopolis, an interactive museum dedicated to the history of wine. A Frenchman called Claude conducted a tasting session. He poured a thimbleful of wine, a Chardonnay, into our glasses. Claude told us to swirl our wine in the glass and observe its colour and clarity. |
