Fat Bastard Wine in the US

The collection of wines under the brand, chosen by winemakers Thierry Boudinaud and Guy Anderson, is one of the top selling French wine brands in the US. The new sparkling wine is a blend of 50% Chenin Blanc and 50% Ugni Blanc.

Port sales boosted by new fashionable cocktails

According to The Scotsman newspaper, the Portuguese fortified wine is being used as an ingredient in cocktails such as 'Cheeky Vimto' - a double port mixed with a bottle of the WKD Blue alcopop.

The report said that the number of people under 35 drinking port has surged since 2001. Indeed, UK retailer Marks & Spencer said it expects port to be its second best-selling line after champagne in the run up to Christmas.

Australian Wines up to half the cost

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, some retailers are selling certain wines at up to half of what they cost two years ago. While the country’s vintners are feeling the strain, consumers are reportedly taking advantage of the cheap prices.

French customs accused of stealing wine

According to Decanter magazine, French customs is being accused of stealing more than 200,000 bottles of wine seized during a fraud investigation. Customs officials confiscated 'a large amount' of wine from the cellars of Bordeaux cru bourgeois Château Tour Seran in 1999. But now it appears that a lot of that wine has gone missing from the custom officials who argue that it has already been returned.

Sopexa French Wine Tasting Series in Bangalore & Delhi

Sopexa organized another tasting for The Sopexa French Wine Tasting Series. This was conducted in Bangalore and New Delhi. Sommelier Franck Thomas who holds the title of "Best Sommelier of France" is running the tasting series. He is also the co-inventor of "Clef du Vin", an instrument to measure ageing potential of wines, and co-owner of the Michelin star "Le Parcours."

Chateau Indage launches new low cost wine

The Indage group has launched wine branded as Vino priced at Rs90 for a 750ml bottle. The new wine is being marketed in a PET bottle with a screw cap. The wine, targeted at both men and women, will be available in Mumbai and New Delhi to begin with, and would be available in other cities soon. Chateau Indage currently produces over 15 domestic and international export brands with presence in 34 countries including France, the UK, and the US.

U.S. Wine Consumption Reaches Record Levels

Americans are drinking more wine than ever. The United States' total wine consumption increased more than 4 percent last year to 270 million cases, according to the just-released 2005 edition of The U.S. Wine Market: Impact Databank Review and Forecast. Three brands, namely Yellow Tail, Franzia and Beringer--combined for a net gain of nearly 5 million cases in 2004, a 14 percent increase collectively. A total of around 7,000 wine brands are sold in the United States, and 96 percent of them sell less than 100,000 cases.

Maharashtra wine production increases dramatically

The grape wine industry in Maharashtra has increased dramatically. In 2005, the state recorded 81.25 per cent rise in wine production compared with last year. Of this, Nashik district's share is at 32 per cent. Read the Rediff article which discusses this further.

Equity firms buys stake in Sula

Sula Vineyards announced that private equity fund GEM India Advisors (GIA) has invested an amount of Rs 15 crore ($3.5 million) for a minority stake in the company. The Samant family will continue to retain majority control. Read more at Sify.com

Grapes of wealth for the US wine market

The US wine market was worth an estimated $21.1 billion in 2004 and this is set to grow over the next four years to reach $24.8 billion by 2009. This represents a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.3%, which is higher than the forecast CAGR for many European markets.

Sawkar family to market wine in India

Dr Raghu Sawkar who is the only Indian to own a vineyard and make wines in the Nppa Valley in California is planning to make wines in India as well. He is planning to bring Sawkar Family wines into the country with a local partner and is investing Rs. 6.7 crores. Ready more at Sify.com
