Wine May Protect Against Colorectal Cancer

Wine Spectator pointed out that according to researchers at Stony Brook University in New York, a glass or two of wine with dinner could also help to keep cancer away from parts of the digestive tract. A study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology found that wine drinkers are half as likely to develop colorectal cancer as nondrinkers.

Decanter World Wine Awards a Success

The cream of the wine world gathered in London last night at a glittering presentation of the second annual Decanter World Wine Awards. Over 300 winemakers, producers and proprietors from a dozen countries celebrated 72 regional trophies – and the keenly anticipated International Awards. The Château Indage Ivy Chenin Blanc 2003 and the Château Indage Ivy Merlot 2003 received commendations.

EU & US resolve 20-year arguement over trade names

The EU and the US have overcome a major hurdle in resolving a 20-year argument over trade names – but their agreement has been called 'an absurdity' by some in Europe. The new Wine Accord is the first phase of an agreement on the wine trade that will help protect names like Champagne, Chianti, Madeira and sherry.

Indian wine exports increase at 9% growth rate

While the Indian wine market has been stuck to around 3.5 million bottles the last three years, the exports from the country are constantly on a rise at an annual rate of over 9 per cent. At present, India exports about 10 lakh bottles a year. Vineyards like Grover Vineyards expect this rate to grow to 15% this year.

Cornell University Creates Undergraduate Winemaking Degree

The program, the first of its kind on the East Coast, will focus on cool-climate varieties grown in the Finger Lakes and Long Island. Cornell, which is located in Ithaca, already has enology and viticulture programs at the graduate level and has long conducted research, as well as outreach programs for New York wineries. It also has one of the best hospitality programs in the world.

The Wine Society hosts Dr Ariff Jamal

Dr Ariff Jamal, Chief Wine Maker and Export Director of Albert Bichot from Burgundy joint The Wine Society for an educational evening onwines in general and Albert Bichot's Burgundy collection. The event was held at the Maurya Sheraton on August 28th, 2005.
