Chile exports more wine than any other country

Fifteen years ago, when Geenral Pinohet stepped down, nobody had heard about Chilean wine. Exporting wine was not on the national agenda and Chile drank 90 percent of its own wine.

Since then Chile has undergone a quiet revolution and national wine production has doubled as well as become better, with the introduction of improved vines and a broader spectrum of grapes. Chile is predominantly a red wine producing country - 70 percent of the vineyard area is planted with red varieties. More than 60 percent of Chilean wine now goes to overseas markets, including India - the highest national wine export level in the world.
