Abhay Kewadkar, Chief Wine Maker and Business Head, United Spirits Ltd (Wines), spoke to Brinda Gill about Four Seasons wines, recently launched in Pune, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and a Rosé (a Blush Zinfandel). “The wines have been crafted taking into consideration the expression of the grape and are perfect (100%) varietals,” Kewadkar said.
“We are very selective about the vineyards we source grapes from. We study the soil, drainage and crop to get the correct expression and yield,” he continued.
“Our Baramati winery has the best international winery equipment and is the only winery in India to have an INERTIS press. The press ensures perfect inert conditions during the pressing of grapes which helps obtain the correct aromas. Cleanliness, hygiene and quality control in the winery are a top priority.
“Towards the end of this year we will also launch reserves of the two reds, ie, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, which are being aged in French oak barrels.
“I am happy with the way the wines have turned out. Only if I am pleased with the wines do they go to the market. They will gradually be introduced in different cities, and by May we plan to cover markets across India.”
The wines range in price between Rs 400 and Rs 550 inclusive of tax in most states (Karnataka is an exception because of higher taxes).
